“Our message to Brazil is one of hope and reconstruction. The great edifice of rights, sovereignty and development that this nation built has been systematically demolished in recent years. It is on the reconstruction of this building that we are going to direct all our efforts, ”he added. .

The official recalled that in 2002, when he won the first presidential election, he and his supporters said that hope had overcome fear, in the sense of overcoming fear in the face of the unprecedented election of a representative of the working class.

And “it was demonstrated that a representative of the working class could, yes, dialogue with society to promote economic growth in a sustainable manner and for the benefit of all, especially those most in need,” he recalled.

“Health resources were emptied. They dismantled Education, Culture, Science and Technology. They destroyed the protection of the Environment. They did not leave resources for school meals, vaccination, citizen security, ”he said.

“I promise to maintain, defend and comply with the constitution, observe the laws and promote the general good of the Brazilian people, uphold the unity, integrity and independence of Brazil”, he said, during the inauguration.

The new Brazilian president had already assumed two terms (2003 to 2010).

Lula da Silva was received in Congress by the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, Arthur Lira and Rodrigo Pacheco, respectively.

The solemn opening session began with a brief intervention by the President of the Senate, who honored the soccer player Pelé and the recently deceased Pope Benedict XVI, asking for a minute of silence.

Then, the national anthem followed and, later, Lula da Silva ratified the Constitutional Commitment and signed the mandate together with the vice president, Geraldo Alckmin.

After speaking to the public, Lula da Silva travels to the Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to hold a reception closed to the public with various guests from more than 65 foreign delegations, including heads of state, vice presidents, heads of diplomacy , special envoys and representatives of international organizations.

The celebrations will be attended by the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, and the former Prime Minister and personal friend of Lula da Silva, José Sócrates.

Also the presidents of Angola, João Lourenço; from Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta; from Cape Verde, José Maria Neves; from Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and the executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), Zacarias da Costa, will be present.

Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party) is the first head of state to serve three terms in recent Brazilian history. A six-time candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, he was the first labor leader to reach the most important position in the country’s political leadership.
