Israeli strikes kill two Syrian soldiers, close Damascus airport

Two Syrian soldiers were killed this morning in Israeli strikes on the Damascus airport, which has been closed, the state news agency SANA reported.

“The Israeli enemy carried out an air strike with missiles, targeting Damascus International Airport and its surroundings,” causing “the death of two soldiers, wounding two others” and material damage, the agency reported, citing a Syrian military source. .

The airport is “out of service”, added the same source.

Rami Abdul Rahman of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Israeli attack targeted “Hizbullah positions and pro-Iranian groups in and around the airport, including an arms depot.”

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in the neighboring country, targeting positions of the Syrian army, pro-Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah.

The Hebrew state rarely comments on the attacks on Syria, but says it will not allow Iran to expand its influence in the country.

These attacks usually take place near the Damascus airport, which was already closed during an attack on June 10.
