USA: A transgender person convicted of murder is due to be executed this Tuesday, a first

A clemency petition has been filed with the Governor of Missouri to prevent the execution of Amber McLaughlin, a transgender woman.

In the absence of leniency, it will be the first to be in the United States. Amber McLaughlin, a 49-year-old transgender woman, will be executed by injection Tuesday in Missouri for killing an ex-girlfriend in 2003, the Associated Press reports.

Amber McLaughlin’s attorney, Larry Komp, said a clemency petition was filed with Republican Gov. Mike Parson on the grounds that the death row inmate suffers from brain damage and childhood trauma.

Convicted of rape and murder in 2003

Amber McLauglin was sentenced to death for raping and killing a woman in 2003. According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), this will be the first execution of a transgender person in the United States.

18 people were executed in the United States in 2022, including two in Missouri. Another execution is scheduled in that state for February 7.
