From this Monday, the British will be able to pay their respects next to the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II, which will be accessible for 24 hours in the Cathedral of Sant’Egidio, in Edinburgh.
The monarch’s body spent the night at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where it arrived on Sunday from Balmoral Castle.
Today at 2:30 p.m. he will leave in procession accompanied on foot by King Carlos III and other members of the royal family to the cathedral, one kilometer away, where a mass will be celebrated.
The coffin, with the Crown of Scotland on top, will remain in the cathedral until Tuesday night and people will be able to enter and pay their respects, guarded by a guard from the Royal Company of Archers.
The king and other members of the family will return from the day to hold a vigil.
The cathedral named after Sant’Egidio, patron saint of people with disabilities, was founded around 1124 by King David I.
In Edinburgh, Carlos III will also receive the Scottish Prime Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, at Holyroodhouse and will visit Parliament, where he will receive a message of condolences.
Before traveling to Edinburgh, the King, accompanied by the Queen Consort Camilla, will visit Parliament in London to receive condolences from the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
On Tuesday, the king travels to Belfast and the coffin with the body of Elizabeth II will be transferred to London, where the state funeral will take place on September 19 in Westminster Abbey.
Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after more than 70 years of the longest reign in UK history.
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on April 21, 1926 in London and became Queen of England in 1952, at age 25, after the death of her father, George VI, who took over when his brother abdicated.
After the death of the monarch, his eldest son, 73 years old, assumes the role of king as Carlos III.
