Germany rejects Polish demand for World War II reparations

The German government has formally rejected Warsaw’s request to negotiate compensation related to the damage suffered by Poland during World War II, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday.

“According to the German government, the case of reparations and compensation for war-related damage is still closed and the German government has no intention of opening negotiations on this matter,” said a statement from Polish diplomacy, published after the response was sent. to Berlin. official.

Poland claims damages from Germany, which Warsaw values at 300 billion euros.

Today, Polish diplomacy presented the case to the UN, asking the high representatives of the organization for their “cooperation and support so that Poland can receive compensation for the damage caused by the German aggression and occupation in the years 1939-1945.” “.

According to Germany, Poland renounced these war reparations in 1953 and has confirmed this position on several occasions. Berlin presented arguments identical to the claims for damages presented in the past by Greece.

The ultra-conservative Polish nationalists currently in power question the validity of this 1953 agreement, arguing that Warsaw acted at that time under pressure from the former Soviet Union.

Since coming to power in Poland in 2015, the Law and Justice (PiS) party has championed the issue of war reparations, insisting that Germany has a “moral duty” in this situation.
