A miracle, but maybe not an accident. This Tuesday, the Californian emergency services intervened in an a priori terrible scenario, on the coast of San Mateo County, between Sacramento and San José. At the bottom of a cliff along Highway 1 rests a white Tesla, completely destroyed after falling 70 to 90 meters, police say.
“The damage to the vehicle indicates that it crashed and then overturned several times,” before landing on his feet, Brian Pottenger, the firefighter in charge of the section involved in this scene, described in a video posted on Twitter.
When rescuers descend to assess the situation, they notice “movements in the front seat through the windshield, with binoculars,” he continues.
“We were very shocked when we found a victim alive in the vehicle. It was a hopeful moment for us,” said the firefighter.
In the end, not one survivor, but four, are pulled from the car: two children with minor injuries and two adults with “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver arrested
One question remains: how did this car end up at the bottom of the cliff? After passing “toute la nuit” à “interrogate des témoins et à cueillir des preuves sur les lieux”, the enquêteurs de la police “estim probable que cet incident était un acte intentionnel”, declaré la California Highway Patrol dans un communiqué publié Tuesday night.
The Tesla driver was arrested for “attempted murder and child abuse.” “The Tesla’s driving mode has not been determined, but it does not appear to be a contributing factor to this incident,” police added.
The driver, currently hospitalized for his injuries, will be detained upon discharge, police said.
