The Ukrainian army says it controlled “more than 20 places” in 24 hours

The Ukrainian army announced on Monday that it had retaken “more than 20 places” in 24 hours, as part of its counteroffensive against the Russian army, specifically in eastern Ukraine.

“The liberation of localities from the Russian invaders continues in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions” (east), the Ukrainian army said in its morning report.

“Across the entire front line, the Ukrainian forces managed to expel the enemy from more than 20 places” in 24 hours, the document adds.

“During the retreat, the Russian troops hurriedly abandoned their positions and fled,” according to the army.

Ukraine said on Sunday that it had recaptured around 3,000 square kilometers of its territory, mainly in the Kharkiv region, since the beginning of September.

On Sunday night, several regions in the east, north, south and center of the country suffered major power outages, attributed by the Ukrainian authorities to Russian attacks. Near Kharkiv, thermoelectric power plant number 5, the second in the country, was affected, according to the Ukrainian presidency.

Power was quickly restored to some of the affected areas.

In the Kharkiv region, 80 percent of electricity and water supply have been restored, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidency of Ukraine Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on the Telegram social network today.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of almost 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and almost seven million to neighboring countries-, according to the latest UN data, which places this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion was widely condemned by the international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia in everything from banking to energy to sports.

The UN presented as confirmed 5,587 dead civilians and 7,890 wounded, emphasizing that the real figures are much higher and will only be known at the end of the conflict.
