Ukrainian forces on Wednesday announced the destruction of two Russian weapons depots in Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, one of the main fronts of the fighting between the warring factions.
“Our rockets and artillery fire hit several targets. Firstly, high concentrations of military personnel and equipment, and secondly, two ammunition depots in Avdiivka and Liman,” said the spokesman for the eastern group of the army’s Eastern Armed Forces.
Serhii Cherevati indicated that high-precision systems such as US-made HIMARS rocket launchers, self-propelled multiple rocket launchers and MLRS armored vehicles were used, which “achieved a unique precision” similar to what had already happened in Makiivka at the end of the week , also in the Donetsk region, where Russian troops admitted the deaths of 89 soldiers.
The spokesperson confirmed that the The Russian military “made the mistake of using their mobile phones’ geolocation”, concentrating many troops in the same spot.
“The enemy was unable to adequately mobilize its personnel and the Ukrainian secret took advantage of this,” he clarified.
Despite the high enemy losses in the Bakhmut area, Cherevati noted that Russian forces “did not stop attacking the Ukrainian army” and carried out “more than 200 attacks with different systems” this Wednesday.
The unauthorized use of mobile phones in Makiivka by Russian soldiers has already been admitted by the Moscow troops.
Russian Lieutenant General Sergei Sevryukov said in a statement that the phone signals enabled Kiev troops to “determine the coordinates of the location of military personnel” and launch an attack.
Sergei Sevryukov indicated that measures were taken, which he did not specify, to “prevent similar tragic incidents in the future”.
The official promised to punish the offenders.
The attack, one of the deadliest against Kremlin forces since the start of the war in Ukraine more than 10 months ago, took place a minute after the start of the new year, according to Sevryukov.
Ukrainian forces fired six missiles from the HIMARS system at a building “in the Makiivka area”, in the Donetsk region, where Russian soldiers were stationed.
Two ‘missiles’ were intercepted and shot down, but four hit the building and exploded, causing the building to collapse.
Among the dead is the deputy commander of the Russian regiment.
The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24 has already led to the flight of more than 14 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced and more than 7.9 million to European countries -, according to the latest data of the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
Currently, 17.7 million Ukrainians need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and shelter.
The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia political and economic sanctions.
The UN presented 6,919 dead civilians and 11,075 wounded as confirmed since the start of the war, emphasizing that these numbers are far below the real ones.
