The President of Russia Vladimir Putin participated by video conference in the launch of the mission of a warship with new hypersonic cruise missiles – frigate Almirante Gorshkov -, in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and in the Mediterranean Sea.
“I am confident that these powerful weapons will effectively protect Russia from external threats and help defend national interests,” Putin said at the ceremony, which he attended via video conference along with Defense Minister Serguei Shoigu.
“The ship’s crew will be trained in the deployment of hypersonic weapons and long-range cruise missiles,” Shoigu clarified, announcing that the Zircon hypersonic missiles are “capable of overcoming any current or future air defense system”, capable of ” powerful strikes and accurate at sea and on land”.
In recent days, the Russian military command has come under heavy criticism after it failed to contain attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine with American HIMARS rocket launchers on New Year’s Eve, which killed at least 89 soldiers of the Russian army.
