The Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected this morning leader of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, overcoming resistance in the ranks of the party itself.
After four days of voting, McCarthy managed to convince more than a dozen conservatives, already after the 14th attempt, on Friday night, of having failed in the elections by a single vote.
McCarthy had to give in to some demands, including the reinstatement of a long-standing rule of the lower house of Congress that would allow any member to ask for a vote to remove him from office, which could make the Republican an already weakened leader, not only for having given up some powers, but above all for the constant threat of being removed by his detractors.
Choosing a speaker is usually an easy task for a party that has just gained majority control. But not this time: About 200 Republicans were blocked by another 20 Republicans who said Kevin McCarthy wasn’t conservative enough.
The leader of the House of Representatives is the third highest authority in the country, after the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the vice president, Kamala Harris, who also presides over the Senate.
