California and the western United States swept by a succession of violent storms

“Heavy rains” and “damaging winds” are expected in California and Oregon this weekend, two days after an initial storm passed that killed at least two people.

New wave of showers in the program. The United States is bracing for further disruption this weekend, on the heels of previously seeing a bomb cyclone hit the state of California, killing at least two people.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), “heavy rain over saturated ground” is expected to hit the West Coast, while “heavy snow” and “damaging winds” will hit northern and central California and Oregon over the weekend.

Thunderstorms are expected on the West Coast in the coming days with “above normal precipitation” expected January 14-20, according to the forecasting institute in Sacramento, California.

Winds up to 160 km/h

These disturbances should not be as intense as the previous ones, but occur while the country is still under the influence of a cyclone bomb, a system capable of abruptly dropping pressure and generating violent winds, to give rise to the storm.

The violent storm killed at least two people, including a small child. It also cut roads and deprived more than 190,000 people of electricity. Gusts of 160 km/h were recorded in the center and north of the state, accompanied by torrential rains.

The latest deluge dates back to New Year’s Eve: it had also caused flooding and power outages and left the ground saturated with water. According to the US Weather Service (NWS), the city of San Francisco just experienced its ten wettest days since 1871, with 10 inches of precipitation.

Several episodes of heavy rain could affect California through mid-January, according to the NWS.

While it’s hard to make a direct link between this storm and climate change, scientists regularly explain that warming increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Like the rest of the American West, California suffers from a widespread drought that has lasted for more than two decades. In many areas affected by large fires, soils devoid of vegetation are now more vulnerable to flooding and landslides.
