At least one person was killed and 16 injured in a collision between two subway trains in Mexico City, a megalopolis of some 20 million people, authorities said Saturday.
“Sixteen people have been transferred to the hospital (…) At the moment, an unfortunate death is reported,” the mayor of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Twitter.
According to the first indications, the trains collided for reasons not yet determined in a tunnel that connects the Potrero and La Raza stations, on line 3 of the subway that crosses Mexico City from north to south.
A precedent in 2021
The Mexico City Metro is regularly criticized for the lack of maintenance of the facilities. In May 2021, the collapse of a bridge due to the passage of a train caused the death of 26 people and injured a hundred.
Inaugurated in 1969, it has 12 lines, 195 stations for 226 kilometers of tracks. In 2021, it had carried 837 million passengers.
