The United States strongly denounced on Saturday the executions of two men sentenced to death as part of the demonstrations in Iran.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the show trial and execution in Iran of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini,” US Foreign Office spokesman Ned Price tweeted.
“These executions are a key element of the regime’s strategy to suppress the demonstrations,” which have shaken the country for months, he said.
14 convictions
The Iranian justice system announced the hanging this Saturday of these two men guilty, according to the authorities, of having killed a paramilitary during the demonstrations triggered by the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini.
A lower court had sentenced the two men to death on December 4 and the Supreme Court had upheld their sentences on January 3, a move described as “fast-tracked” by human rights NGOs.
Since the start of the protest movement, 14 people have been sentenced to death in connection with the demonstrations, according to a count by Agence France-Presse (AFP) based on official information. Among them, four have been executed, two have seen their sentences confirmed by the Supreme Court, six are awaiting new trials and another two may appeal.
