Ukraine shot down 45 Russian drones overnight as the European country entered the new year, the air force said on Sunday.
In an attack on New Year’s Eve, Moscow attacked Kiev and other Ukrainian cities with Iranian-made missiles and drones.
The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement that the air defense had destroyed 45 “Shahed” drones – 13 drones were shot down by the end of 2022 and another 32 in the new year.
Ukrainian authorities have not disclosed whether any of the drones hit their targets.
Kiev police chief Andriy Nebitov posted on Facebook a photo of the wreckage of a crashed drone with the words “Happy New Year” in Russian. “This is everything you need to know about the terrorist state and its military,” he wrote.
After a string of military defeats, Russia began attacking Ukraine’s infrastructure in October, leaving millions without electricity and heating.
