Brazilian President Lula, the heads of Congress and the Supreme Court on Monday condemned “terrorist acts” -referring to the invasion of the presidential palace, Parliament facilities and the third institution that took place in Brasilia the day before- in a joint statement “in defense of democracy”, published on the Twitter account of the Head of State.
More than 300 people arrested
“The Powers of the Republic, guarantors of democracy and the 1988 Constitution, reject the acts of terrorism, vandalism, criminals, and coup plotters that occurred yesterday in Brasilia,” says the statement signed by Lula and the presidents of the Senate, Chamber of Deputies and the Supreme Court, the day after the simultaneous assaults by Bolsonarists against the buildings of these institutions.
Security forces regained control of selected places of power after a few hours. More than 300 people were arrested and the Prosecutor’s Office demanded the immediate opening of investigations to establish “the responsibility of those involved” in the attack on official buildings.
