Brazil’s head of state and leaders of the legislature and judiciary on Monday condemned “terrorist acts” and called for “defense of democracy” in peace after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro vandalized public buildings in Brasilia.
“The powers of the Republic, guarantors of democracy and the Constitution of 1988, denounce the acts of terrorism, vandalism, criminal and coup that took place yesterday. [domingo] in Brasilia,” said Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the heads of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (of the Senate) and Arthur Lira (of the Chamber of Deputies), and the President of the Supreme Court, Rosa Weber .
The country needs “normality, respect and work” to achieve “progress and social justice,” the joint statement said.
Hundreds of pro-Bolsonaro protesters on Sunday raided and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasília, leading police to intervene to restore order and condemn the international community.
The invasion began after Brazilian far-right militants and supporters of the former president, who had been defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s election, called for protests at the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
However, Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes impeached Federal District Governor Ibaneis Rocha for 90 days as both the governor and Bolsonaro’s former security minister and former justice minister Anderson Torres acted with negligence and omission.
