The Brazilian head of state and the leaders of the legislative and judicial branches condemned this Monday “terrorist acts” and called for the “defense of democracy” in peace, after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro destroyed public buildings in Brasilia.
“The powers of the Republic, guarantors of democracy and the 1988 Constitution, reject the terrorist, vandalism, criminal and coup acts that occurred yesterday. [domingo] in Brasilia”, said, in a joint note, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the heads of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (of the Senate) and Arthur Lira (of the Chamber of Deputies), and the president of the Supreme Court, Rose Weber.
The country needs “normality, respect and work” to achieve “progress and social justice”, the joint statement also says.
Hundreds of pro-Bolsonaro protesters invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on Sunday, forcing police to intervene to restore order and lifting condemnation from the international community.
The invasion began after militants from the Brazilian extreme right and supporters of the former president, defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called a protest on the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
However, the judge of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes dismissed the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, for 90 days, considering that both the governor and the former Secretary of Security and former Minister of Justice of Bolsonaro Anderson Torres have acted with negligence and omission .
