Dozens of people search for Nazi treasure in the Netherlands after a map find

Dozens of people searched for an alleged treasure buried by Nazi German soldiers in the Dutch town of Ommeren last weekend, after the National Archives revealed a map that would indicate its location.

The municipality of Buren, where Ommeren is located, in the center of the country, has today indicated the accuracy of the information on the map, which is supposedly reveals where four boxes full of jewels and coins are buried, an apparent World War II treasure.

After many people tried their luck on Saturday and Sunday in the search for the alleged treasure, according to a municipal spokesman, none of them succeeded, as had happened in the past with researchers from the Dutch State itself.

The spokesperson added that the Treasure hunters have excavated private property, though police have issued no fines.limiting itself to leaving warnings and notices for them to leave the areas they are digging in.

According to the local press, the owner of private land found a man buried in a hole up to his chest who was looking for a treasure.

The municipality banned citizens from using or carrying metal detectors or other devices to find metal objects in some cities, due to the possible presence of World War II unexploded bombs and landmines.

Treasure hunters flocked to Omeren with shovels and metal detectors after the State Archives unveiled a map last week showing the site where Nazi soldiers buried millions of euros in jewellery, watches, gold and diamonds stolen from a bank in Arnhem, in the eastern Netherlands.

The document contains clues to the alleged location of the treasure – four boxes of ammunition filled with watches, jewellery, gold and precious stones – and indicates that the objects were buried at a location in Ommeren, according to the Public Prosecution Service. testimony of a German soldier who guaranteed in 1947 that he had seen three comrades bury the boxes.

The valuable loot was stolen by German soldiers in August 1944 from a branch of the Robaverbank (1911-1947) in Arnhem after the building had been hit by bombs.

According to reports in the documents, the German soldiers initially hid the valuables in their own coats and then filled chests and boxes with empty ammunition before burying them.

Given the enormous value of the objects (several million euros, according to the National Archives), the Dutch State itself has tried several times to locate them, but without success.

The alleged treasure map comes from the archives of the Netherlands Institute of Directors, which is dedicated to research into German possessions on Dutch soil after the Second World War.

One of the official theories is that the treasure was dug up by the same military a few days later, because Ommeren was still a war-ravaged area, so no one has been able to locate it in recent decades.
