The former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District and former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, who is in the United States, announced that he will return to Brazil to appear before the courts.
“I made the decision to interrupt my vacation and return to Brazil. I will go to trial and take care of my defense,” he wrote on Twitter.
“I have always based my actions on ethics and legality. I believe in Brazilian justice and in the strength of the institutions. I am sure that the truth will prevail,” he added.
These statements come after the judge of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes ordered today the arrest of Anderson Torres.
The Federal Police executed the order this afternoon at the home of Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and Public Security in the Government of Jair Bolsonaro and who until Sunday was Secretary of Public Security for the Federal District, when radical protesters invaded the headquarters of the three Brazilian powers.
Anderson Torres had been exonerated, on Sunday, by the governor of the Federal District, who hours later would also be suspended from office for 90 days in a decision made by the same judge.
Alexandre de Moraes today ordered the arrest of the former commander of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF), Colonel Fábio Augusto Vieira, exonerated on Monday after the invasion of radicals at the headquarters of the three powers of Brazil.
The decision was made by Judge Alexandre de Moraes who, hours before this decision, said that “the institutions will punish all those responsible. Those who carried out the acts, those who financed them, those who encouraged them, by action or omission.”
Fábio Augusto Vieira was in charge of the Military Police operation during the attacks perpetrated by thousands of extremists on Sunday in Brasilia. This colonel was exonerated the next day.
Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on Sunday, forcing police to intervene to restore order and drawing condemnation from the international community.
The Military Police managed to retake control of the headquarters of the three powers, in an operation that resulted in around 1,500 detainees.
The invasion began after militants from the Brazilian extreme right, supporters of the former president, defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called a protest on the Esplanada dos Ministérios.
However, the judge of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes dismissed the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, for 90 days, considering that both the governor and the former Secretary of Security and former Minister of Justice of Bolsonaro Anderson Torres have acted with negligence and omission .
