Invasion and vandalism in Brasilia: “Movement showed barbaric character against institutions of the Republic”

Three days after the invasion of the legislative, executive and judicial powers in Brazil, the echoes of the incident are still felt. Clodomiro Bannwart Júnior, professor of political philosophy at the State University of Londrina and specialist in electoral law, points out that the invasion had already been prepared for a long time.

“This coup movement, of federal, military intervention, and at the same time, requesting and calling for the coup, crossed our electoral process, with the election of Lula. In the last 60 days, in Brazil, we had people stationed in barracks, asking for the intervention of the military. This movement ended up spilling over, on Sunday, in the federal capital, with a negative, deplorable result, and which demonstrates the criminal nature and barbaric that these people committed against the institutions of our Republic. “he says to TSF Clodomiro Bannwart Junior.

The coup attempt ended up not materializing, and around 1,500 protesters have already been detained, to determine possible responsibilities in the invasion. For Clodomiro Bannwart Júnior, the lack of clear leadership turned out to be decisive for the coup attempt to come to fruition.

“There was no better leadership or organization to carry out this purpose than was on the agenda of this group, which is a coup, an institutional rupture in which the Armed Forces could take command of the country,” he explains, stressing that the invasions in Brasilia “were planted during the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.”

The police forces in Brazil have been accused, in the first phase, of not having done anything to contain the invasion. Clodomiro Bannwart Júnior acknowledges that some elements of the security forces are on the side of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and says that a strong pronouncement from the police commanders is needed to side with democratic legality.

“There is a political polarity that divides the country in two, but we must have a more present, strong and energetic position of the Armed Forces, positioning itself in favor of legality and the federal Constitution,” he considers.

“I also think it would be very important to acknowledge the defeat of former President Bolsonaro, in an attempt to pacify his political group, especially the most exalted who produced the acts of vandalism in Brasilia,” he adds.

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on Sunday, forcing police to intervene to restore order and drawing condemnation from the international community.

The Military Police managed to retake control of the headquarters of the three powers, in an operation that resulted in around 1,500 detainees.

The invasion began after militants from the Brazilian extreme right, supporters of the former president, defeated by Lula da Silva in last October’s elections, called a protest on the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

However, the judge of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes dismissed the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, for 90 days, considering that both the governor and the former Secretary of Security and former Minister of Justice of Bolsonaro Anderson Torres have acted with negligence and omission .
