The now Republican-controlled US House Judiciary Committee has opened an investigation into classified documents found in the home and an office of President Joe Biden, dating to his time as Vice President (2009-2017). ).
Republican Congressmen Jim Jordan, the commission’s chairman, and Mike Johnson wrote a letter to United States Attorney General Merrick Garland announcing the initiation of the investigation and requesting documents related to the case, including reports from the Department of Justice, the FBI and the White House, and the appointment of the special prosecutor investigating the case.
“We are following the actions of the Department of Justice regarding the mishandling of classified documents by former Vice President Biden, including the apparent unauthorized possession of classified material in a private Washington DC office and in the garage of his home in Wilmington, Delaware. ”, the letter says.
“We look forward to your full cooperation with our inquiry,” Jordan and Johnson added, requesting that the materials be submitted by January 27.
The letter highlighted concerns related to “transparency and accountability on the part of the highest executive branch.”
On Friday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee also opened an investigation into the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, ordered by the Biden administration and described as chaotic.
Hours earlier, US Attorney General Merrick Garland had chosen Robert Hur, a former US attorney appointed by former President Donald Trump, as special counsel to investigate the case of the security documents. Biden.
Hur’s election marks the second time in as many months that Garland has appointed a special counsel.
The investigations, including one involving Trump, involve sensitive information, though there are differences between the cases.
Biden said Tuesday that he was unaware of the contents of the confidential documents.
“My lawyers did not suggest that I ask what the documents were about. They delivered the boxes to the archives and we are fully collaborating with the review” of the documents, stressed the head of state.
On Monday night, Biden’s legal counsel, Richard Sauber, reported that the president’s lawyers discovered in November a “small number of classified documents” in a “locked cabinet” at the Penn Biden Center, a think-tank linked to the University of Pennsylvania, and proceeded to deliver them to the National Archives, in charge of conserving this type of material.
Biden maintained an office at that facility after stepping down as vice president in 2017, until shortly before launching his 2019 presidential campaign.
