United States: two planes almost collided at JFK airport, an open investigation

The first Delta Airlines plane was in the takeoff phase on Friday night, when it had to be interrupted urgently. Another plane was then in the middle of the runway.

An investigation was opened this Monday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after a plane crossed a runway at New York’s JFK airport while another was taking off, reported the American media CNN.

A Delta Airlines Boeing 737 -carrying 145 passengers and six crew members- had to urgently abort its takeoff while an American Airlines Boeing 777 was in the middle of the runway. The latter carried 137 passengers and 14 crew members.

“Aborted takeoff”

In a recording recovered by the US media, we can hear an air traffic controller realizing the urgency of the situation.

“Shit! Delta 1943, abort takeoff,” can be heard on the recording.

The Federal Aviation Administration said only about 1,000 feet separated the two aircraft when the Delta Airlines plane came to rest on the runway.

Aircraft collisions are particularly feared when air traffic has never been more important since the Covid-19 pandemic. The biggest air disaster, the one in Tenerife in Spain in 1977, involved two planes and resulted in the deaths of 583 people.
