Senegal: at least 22 dead in collision between a bus and a truck

The bus that crashed on Monday had a capacity of 32 seats but was carrying 47 passengers, Prime Minister Amadou Ba announced.

A collision between a bus and a truck killed at least 22 people on Monday in Senegal, where carriers are resisting the measures announced a week earlier after another accident in which more than 40 people died.

“We have exceeded all the limits and it is the responsibility of the government to implement the measures,” he announced on January 9, Prime Minister Amadou Ba said as a strike against these very measures was approaching, while saying they are ready to discuss with the carriers. .

A witness interviewed by private radio station RFM reported that the bus had swerved to avoid a donkey, one of those many animals that roam the roads of Senegal.

This new accident highlights the well-known road ills of Senegal as of many African countries: dilapidated and dangerous vehicle layout, reckless driving or even widespread corruption of law enforcement officers or issuing driving licences.

The tragedy of January 8, one of the deadliest in Senegal in recent years, has unleashed a torrent of criticism against the authorities for their inability to enforce traffic regulations, but also regulations on the condition of vehicles.

The government immediately announced about twenty measures. Many of them are criticized by transport professionals for being out of step with economic realities or lifestyles, for example, the ban on buses and minibuses running at night, or the ban on importing used tyres.
