Russian and Belarusian flags banned from Australian Open at Ukraine’s request
The Australian Tennis Federation banned the Russian and Belarusian flags from the Australian Open on Tuesday, following a request from Ukraine’s ambassador for action after they were spotted in the crowd.
“The flags of Russia and Belarus are banned from the Australian Open,” the Australian Tennis Federation said in a statement, adding that the ban took “immediate” effect.
“Our initial policy was that fans could bring them but they couldn’t use them to cause disruption,” Tennis Australia added.

In Dnipro, the toll of the Russian attack could soon exceed 40 dead
The death toll from a Russian attack on a residential building in Ukraine’s Dnipro, one of the highest since the start of the war, is likely to rise further on Tuesday after climbing to 40 dead the day before.
“The rescue operation, the demolition of the rubble, will not end until the bodies of all the dead are found,” said Kyrylo Tymoshenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency.
He added that “several (injured) are in serious condition, including a child.”
Moscow has denied responsibility for the carnage in Dnipro and blamed the Ukrainians. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke of a “tragedy” that could be caused by a shot from the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense.
