At least one person was killed and four injured in an explosion on an oil tanker in Thailand’s western Samut Songkhram province on Tuesday that left seven people missing, official sources said.
Sources from the Samut Songkhram Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department told the EFE agency that the causes of the Smooth Sea ship explosion are still unknown.
The tanker’s tanks, with a capacity of 6,500 tons of crude, were empty as the ship was undergoing maintenance at the Mae Klong river port.
The explosion, which damaged several houses near the port, located about 85 kilometers southwest of the capital Bangkok, began in a tanker truck at 09:17 (02:17 in Lisbon), according to the Bangkok Post. .
Thailand’s military department said emergency crews had brought the flames under control within an hour and an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
In July 2021, one person was killed and 33 others injured in an explosion at a chemical plant near Bangkok, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,800 people.
Two people were injured in 2014 after an oil tanker exploded, starting a fire that spread to another ship at a port on the Mekong River, which separates Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province from neighboring Laos.
