His name is Spike, he is 23 years old and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest dog in the world. The Chihuahua, who lives in Camden, Ohio, in the United States, was awarded the title on Thursday.
Spike has a curious history. It was found in 2009 by its current owner, age 10, in the parking lot of a grocery store, showing signs of abuse.
“When we left the store and got to the parking lot, he followed us. We opened the car door to put our grandson in the car seat, and he jumped in and sat in the seat,” the owner told Guinness.
Rita Kimball says she discovered Spike was the world’s oldest dog after seeing news of the death of Pebbles, a 22-year-old dog who was considered the world’s oldest dog until then.
Vets who have examined Spike, who is nearly blind and hard of hearing, say he was born between July and November 1999.
