Lula fires army commander

Brazil’s President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva has fired the army’s commander, General Júlio César de Arruda, and appointed General Tomás Ribeiro Paiva to the post, the Brazilian press revealed this Saturday.

The announcement comes a day after Lula da Silva met in Brasília with Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro, as well as Army, Navy Commanders Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen and Air Force Lieutenant Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz . Damascus.

The change also comes two weeks after the invasion of the headquarters of the Congress, Presidency and Federal Supreme Court in Brasília by thousands of sympathizers and supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who left power on January 1.

The newspaper Folha de São Paulo reports that the decision to dismiss the army commander was communicated on this day to General Júlio César de Arruda, who will leave office in a month.

According to the newspaper, Lula da Silva believes that General Júlio César de Arruda “did not show the will” to act quickly to answer questions about the army’s role in the January 8 invasions.

The O Globo newspaper recalls that Tomás Ribeiro Paiva, now appointed commander of the army, is 62 years old and since 2021 heads the Southeastern Military Command, still under the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

On Friday, after the meeting with the military commands, Brazil’s Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro stated that he does not believe in the “direct involvement of the armed forces” in the attacks in Brasília, but that if anyone were to participate, he would would “respond as a citizen”.

“I understand that there was no direct involvement of the armed forces. If an element, individually, has participated, it will respond as a civilian,” the defense minister said at the end of the meeting, quoted in the local press.
