France and Germany vow to support Ukraine “as long as necessary”.

“We will continue to give Ukraine all our support for as long as it takes,” German government head Olaf Scholz pledged alongside French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday.

The French head of state, in turn, assured that “unwavering support” to Ukraine “will continue in all areas” and that the European Union “has not been hiding or divided” because of the Russian invasion of the country about a year ago. year.

The Chancellor of Germany also pointed out that Franco-German cooperation is fundamental to the future of Europe. “The future, like the past, depends on our two countries working together as a driving force for a united Europe,” Scholz said in a speech at Sorbonne University.

Emmanuel Macron agreed, saying France and Germany should be “pioneers” in Europe’s development. “Germany and France, having paved the way for reconciliation, must become pioneers in the relaunch of Europe,” said the French leader, referring to the need to “build a new energy model”, “innovation and technologies of tomorrow” to encourage and ensure that the European Union is “a geopolitical power in its own right, in defence, space and diplomacy”.

Macron and Scholz will preside this Sunday in Paris at commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty, which guided Franco-German relations in the process of European construction.

In a joint statement released Friday, the two leaders called on the European Union (EU) to strengthen its sovereignty in order to have “geopolitical capacity to shape the international order”.

“Enhanced European capabilities and a stronger European pillar in NATO also make us a stronger partner across the Atlantic and the United States – better equipped, more efficient and more powerful,” the two leaders wrote.

The treaty signed on January 22, 1963, by President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer made it possible to overcome “decades, even centuries, of bitter rivalry and bloody wars” between the two countries, Macron and Scholz said.

In a statement released 60 years ago, de Gaulle and Adenauer argued that “closer cooperation” between France and Germany would be “an indispensable step towards a united Europe”.

The treaty, regarded as an example of reconciliation between former enemies, established mechanisms of consultation and cooperation in foreign policy, economic and military integration, and student education exchanges.

The understanding between the two countries would influence European integration in the following decades, in what became known as the “Franco-German axis”, described as the political engine of the process that created the current EU.

Macron and Scholz will attend a ceremony followed by a joint cabinet meeting.

The two leaders also have a dinner on their agenda, according to Macron’s agenda released by his office.

The war in Ukraine, which has been going on for almost a year, is likely to be one of the topics at the Paris rallies, especially after Germany delayed a decision on sending its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukrainian troops.
