The shooter suspected of killing 10 people at a California dance hall Saturday night during Lunar New Year celebrations is an “Asian male” who remains at large, the Los Angeles County sheriff said Sunday.
“At this time, our very preliminary description is of an Asian male,” Sheriff Robert Luna said at a news conference in Asian-majority Monterey Park.
As a reminder, gunfire erupted Saturday night in Monterey Park, California, as thousands of people gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year. At least 10 people were killed and ten others wounded in the shooting, which occurred around 10 p.m. local time (7 a.m. Sunday French time).
Tens of thousands of people had just gathered near the scene of the shooting for the two-day festivities, which are among the largest of their kind in Southern California.
Specialized investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office are “assisting Monterey Park Police in the investigation of a fatal shooting,” according to a statement.
