Burkina Faso has requested the departure of French troops from its soil within a month, according to a letter from the Ouagadougou authorities sent this Sunday by a diplomatic source.
France wants confirmation of “high level”
In this letter from the Burkina Faso Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed to Paris and dated Wednesday, Ouagadougou “denounces and terminates in its entirety the agreement” of December 17, 2018 “relating to the status of the French armed forces involved” in the country, specifying that this agreement imposes a “notice period of one month”.
“In view of the one-month notice period imposed by said agreement in the event of a complaint, the Burkina Faso Ministry of Foreign Affairs would appreciate special diligence being given to receiving it,” the document specifies. The Burkinabe diplomatic source could not confirm on Sunday whether Paris acknowledged receipt of this letter.
Questioned, the French presidency indicated that it was awaiting confirmation of Burkina Faso’s position at the “highest level”.
Emmanuel Macron himself reacted to the situation during his press conference this Sunday, demanding “clarification” about the intentions of the Ouagadougou authorities.
