Train traffic at the Gare de l’Est station in Paris was interrupted on Tuesday morning by a fault in the signaling, which authorities say was caused by an act of vandalism.
Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a fire broke out at a signal point, in what was initially thought to be an accident but turned out to be arson, authorities added.
“According to the initial findings, we can say that it was a deliberate fire on the electricity cables,” a spokesman for the railway company SNCF told AFP.
Gare de l’Est is a busy station and the departure point for long-distance trains to eastern France, Germany and Luxembourg.
There are no trains running before 10 a.m., the spokesman said.
TGV trains to Nancy, Colmar and Reims, as well as to Frankfurt, Germany, have been canceled or delayed, the station’s information boards indicate.
According to SNCF data, about 41 million people used Gare de l’Est in 2019.
