German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided on Tuesday to send German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Der Spiegel advances.
The publication also adds that other countries allied with Ukraine will be ready to follow this decision.
Under pressure to authorize the re-export of Leopard 2 tanks, Germany in recent hours faced a formal request from Poland to send 14 of these pieces of equipment.
The head of the Polish Government, Mateusz Morawiecki, said in this regard that Poland, “like other countries in their respective territories”, is already training Ukrainian soldiers, although he did not clarify whether this training is intended for the use of manufactured armored vehicles. “We will also ask the European Union (EU) to reimburse the costs. This will be further proof of their goodwill. The EU must compensate us for these costs,” Morawiecki insisted.
At a press conference in Berlin with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius encouraged countries that intend to supply Leopard tanks to Ukraine to start training Ukrainian soldiers who they will operate on them.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.
