Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi dies at age 95

Architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, a pupil of Le Corbusier and the first Indian laureate of the Pritzker Prize in 2018, died in India on Tuesday at the age of 95, the family and the international prize committee announced.

The Sangath Studio in Ahmedabad, run by one of her granddaughters, who announced her death, is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of her work, which from 1950 onwards had a particular impact in India and the world, the Pritzker Commission stressed in a statement. press release praising their work.

For his part, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the work of “a brilliant architect and remarkable builder of institutions”.

Balkrishna Doshi, a pioneer of modernist architecture and a staunch defender of decent housing for the poorest social classes, never obtained an official degree in his profession, but studied under the legendary French architect of Swiss origin Le Corbusier (1887-1965), whose influence a lifelong inspiration.

Doshi was committed to creating a style that brought together the canons of modernism, vernacular forms of ancestral architecture and models of social housing with sustainable materials.

Among the projects he undertook were housing projects in Aranya and Indore, and the construction of the School of Management and Commerce in Bangalore, India.
