Two people died and seven were injured, three of them seriously, after being attacked with a knife by another person on a regional train connecting the cities of Kiel and Hamburg on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the German newspaper Bild, one of the seriously injured is even in danger. The train had stopped at Brokstedt station, in northern Germany, when the attack took place, causing panic within the composition.
“A traveler attacked others with a knife on the regional express between Kiel and Hamburg, injuring at least five people and killing two,” said a spokesman for the federal police.
The suspect was first said to be a Syrian citizen, but according to new information from Bild, he is a Palestinian refugee from Gaza
Also according to Bild, nine ambulances, three emergency doctors and a rescue helicopter from Hamburg were involved in the rescue operations, adding that the suspect had injuries to his hands when he was arrested, which police said was done by himself.
A spokesman for the German Ministry of the Interior has now revealed that the suspect is being treated for his injuries under police supervision at the hospital in Neumünster.
According to a spokesman for the German police, “a man between the ages of 20 and 30 stabs with a knife other passengers on the train, but also on the platform” of Brokstedt, confirming the existence of “two dead, three seriously injured and four minor injuries”.
“At around 2:55 pm (1:55 pm in Lisbon), several emergency calls were registered. We still do not know how many passengers were on the train and who are under observation by the medical teams. The identities of the injured and the dead are not yet known, nor from the perpetrator of the crime. The perpetrator is also injured and on his way to the hospital in Neumünster for help, after which he will be questioned. The police are questioning several witnesses at the scene,” the same police source clarified.
Meanwhile, a witness traveling first class told West Coast News that he saw two passengers running through the train at one point during the journey. “I packed up and ran after it, we drove across about four to six carriages, there were traces of blood everywhere. I saw at least five injured people, who were transported in ambulances,” he revealed.
