France has received the denunciation by the Government of Burkina Faso of the defense agreement that unites the two countries since 2018 and will withdraw its soldiers from the country within the agreed period of one month, reported the Quai d’Orsay on Wednesday.
The Burkinabe government will confirm Monday its decision to meet the military agreement with France, where around 400 members of the special forces are stationed in a camp near Ouagadougou, without a mandate to intervene against the Danish djihadist groups That country.
This decision, reminiscent of the one taken by the ruling junta in neighboring Mali regarding the soldiers in Operation Barkhane last year, has fueled speculation about a rapprochement between the Burkinabe military power and Russia, in particular the paramilitary group Wagner.
“We formally received (Tuesday) the denunciation, by the government of Burkina Faso, of the 2018 agreement regarding the status of the French forces present in this country,” the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“According to the terms of the agreement, the termination takes effect one month after receiving the written notice. We will comply with the terms of this agreement by acting on this request.”
The transfer to Niger of at least some of the soldiers previously deployed in Burkina Faso is one of the ways mentioned to the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
