Japan announces new sanctions against Russian politicians and military

The Japanese government this Friday announced new sanctions against senior Russian political and military officials, as well as an additional ban on Japanese exports of components that could be used in the war effort.

The measures freeze the assets of 36 individuals and three organizations, including those of Russia’s Justice Minister Konstantin Chuichenko and several deputy ministers, state secretaries and senior military officials.

Targets of the sanctions also include political leaders of Ukraine’s self-proclaimed pro-Russian republics, as well as people close to oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, who is considered a close figure of Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, also subject to Japanese sanctions. since March.

Japan also decided to ban exports to 49 organizations related to the invasion of Ukraine and ban the sale of certain components, with Tokyo no longer allowing the shipment of semiconductors and other parts and technological devices.

“Russian invasion of Ukraine cannot be allowed because it undermines an international order”

The goal is to prevent these components from being used in the production of tear gas and automated devices that could be used by Russian forces, said government deputy spokesman Seiji Kihara.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine cannot be allowed because it undermines an international order that has been built with great effort and sacrifice over a long period of time,” Kihara said at a news conference.

Japan, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7 bloc this year, “will continue to work with the G7 countries and the international community to improve the situation.” the spokesperson added.

The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 has so far led to the flight of more than 14 million people — 6.5 million internally displaced persons and nearly eight million to European countries — according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia political and economic sanctions.
