Ukrainian city threatened by floods after Russian attack on water infrastructure

The city of Kryvyi Rih, in central Ukraine, is threatened with flooding after a Russian attack that damaged hydraulic infrastructure and raised a river, the Ukrainian presidency said on Wednesday.

“At the point of impact we saw a water flow of 100 m3 per second, which is a large volume. The water level of the Ingoulets [o rio] changes every hour,” stressed the deputy head of the presidential government, Kyrylo Tymoshenko.

According to the same source, the center and another district of this city of 600,000 inhabitants are “at risk of flooding”.

“It is a challenge for all of us, but the situation is under control. All services are involved to remove the threat as soon as possible,” he added in a post on the social network Telegram.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a resident of Kryvyi Rih, had already announced a Russian attack targeting “hydraulic infrastructure”, without causing any casualties.

For Zelensky, the attack in Moscow was an “attempt to flood Kryvyi Rih”.

“The terrorist state continues to wage war against civilians. (…) All the occupiers can do is create panic, create an emergency, try to leave people without light, heat, water and food,” he stressed. president.

“Are they going to get an honest answer? Absolutely, yes,” Zelensky promised.

The governor of the region, Valentin Reznitchenko, for his part, mentioned that seven Russian Kh-22 missiles were fired from a plane, causing “seriously” damage to this infrastructure.

The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on Feb. 24 has already resulted in more than 13 million people having fled — more than six million internally displaced persons and more than seven million to neighboring countries — according to the latest UN data, which ranks this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the generality of the international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and Russia of political and economic sanctions.

The UN has confirmed more than 5,800 dead civilians and about 8,400 injured since the start of the war, stressing that these numbers are far below the actual number.
