North Korea has condemned Washington’s decision to send tanks to Ukraine, saying the United States is fueling a “proxy war” to destroy Russia.
On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden promised to send 31 Abrams tanks, one of the US military’s powerful and sophisticated combat vehicles, to kyiv. However, this delivery should not take place for “several months,” according to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
Washington “crosses the red line even further,” criticized Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in a press release, accusing the United States, which it describes as an “arch-criminal,” of being responsible for the war in Ukraine.
Along with China, Russia is one of Pyongyang’s few allies on the international scene and Moscow has in the past come directly to the aid of the Kim Jong Un regime.
Moscow support
North Korea is the only one, along with Syria and Russia, to have recognized the independence of Lugansk and Donetsk, two pro-Russian breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.
At the UN Security Council, where Russia is one of five permanent members, Moscow has long argued against international sanctions on North Korea, even calling for them to be relaxed on humanitarian grounds.
Pyongyang’s leader said in 2022 that he wanted his country to have the world’s most powerful nuclear force, calling the North’s nuclear power status “irreversible” in September.
Seoul and Washington give Pyongyang the intention to carry out a new nuclear test soon, which would be the seventh in its history and the first since 2017.
