The Peruvian president urged, on Sunday night during a televised message to La Nación, Parliament to approve early elections for October 2023 and thus try to get out of the political crisis and riots that have left 48 dead since December.
“Ladies and gentlemen parliamentarians, you must understand your historical responsibility. Tomorrow (Monday) they have the opportunity to earn the trust of the country by responding to this long-awaited request of the Peruvian people”, said the President before the disagreement of the Parliament. this Saturday morning a bill in this regard.
“Vote for Peru in favor of the country advancing the elections to 2023 and tell all of Peru with the greatest responsibility that we are all leaving,” he added.
Political crisis since December
He said that if Parliament refused to vote to advance the elections, he would present a constitutional reform aimed at organizing the elections with a first round in October of this year and a second round in December.
On Saturday, a protester was killed during protests demanding Ms. Boluarte’s resignation and elections as soon as possible. This first death in Lima brought to 48 the number of deaths since the start of the riots.
These began on December 7 after the dismissal and arrest of the left-wing president Pedro Castillo, accused of having attempted a coup by wanting to dissolve the Parliament that was preparing to remove him from power.
The crisis is also a reflection of the wide gap between the capital and the impoverished provinces that backed Native American President Castillo and saw his election as payback for what they feel was Lima’s contempt.
Political power finds no response to the demands of the population, especially the rural population of the predominantly indigenous and historically neglected southern Andean region, who expected to see their living conditions improve with the arrival of Castillo to the presidency (2021-2022). ). ).
