A sixth Memphis police officer, involved in the brutal arrest of Tire Nichols, who died three days later, has been “relieved of duty,” Memphis police announced, information reported by various US media, including CNN.
“He has been relieved of duty along with the other officers,” Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said. “This investigation is still ongoing, more information will be shared as the progress of the investigation becomes available.”
Unit involved in arrest disbanded
Memphis police last weekend dismantled the “SCORPION” unit, tasked with patrolling the city’s “high crime spots” and which turned out to be involved in the brutal arrest of Tire Nichols.
This 29-year-old African American died on January 10, three days after he was beaten during his arrest by Memphis police. The video of his arrest, made public on Saturday, deeply shocked public opinion. President Joe Biden, who spoke with the family of Tire Nichols, urged peaceful protests.
The first five police officers involved were indicted and face various charges, including murder and kidnapping.
