Asked this Monday about possible deliveries of combat aircraft to Ukraine during his trip to The Hague (Netherlands), the President of the Republic replied that “in principle, nothing is prohibited.”
The French president outlined “criteria” before any decision:
A “request made” by Ukraine, which “is not ‘escalated'” and “is not likely to touch Russian soil but rather help the resistance effort” and which “does not weaken the capacity of the French army”.
“It is according to the requests that are made but not according to the rumours” that decisions are made, stressed the French head of state, specifying that the Ukrainian Defense Minister, Oleksiï Reznikov, was expected this Tuesday in Paris for talks with his counterpart Sébastien Lecornu.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte stressed for his part that “there was no taboo, but it would be a big step” if fighter jets were delivered to Kyiv.
Hours earlier, Olaf Scholz said he was strongly opposed to supplying fighter jets. “The subject of fighter jets doesn’t even come up. I can only advise against getting into a constant bidding war when it comes to weapons systems,” the German chancellor said.
