Washington and Seoul will conduct simulation exercises focused on nuclear threats, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday.
The United States and South Korea will conduct “increasingly complex scenario-based exercises on the nuclear threats to which the peninsula is subject,” Lloyd Austin wrote in an opinion piece published by the Yonhap news agency.
Lloyd Austin visits Seoul for the third time as Secretary of Defense. He will meet his South Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-sup, as well as President Yoon Suk-yeol.
“American commitment is unwavering”
His visit is aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries, discussing security challenges and reaffirming that “America’s broader commitment to deterrence with the Republic of Korea is unwavering,” Lloyd Austin said.
Military tensions on the South Korean peninsula have risen sharply in 2022. And North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently called for an “exponential” increase in Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal, last year calling the state of Northern nuclear power.
