The European Union hopes to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia before February 24, the date that marks one year since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, the president of the European Commission announced Thursday in kyiv.
In a joint press conference with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, on the occasion of the meeting between the College of the European Commission and the Ukrainian government this Thursday held in kyiv, Ursula von der Leyen assured that the EU will continue to make the Russian president , Vladimir Putin, pay for his heinous war, with the adoption of new sanctions later this month.
“Before Russia started the war, we warned very clearly about the enormous economic costs that we would impose on it in the event of an invasion, and today Russia is paying a high price, since our sanctions are strangling its economy,” said the president of the community executive.
“And we are going to push the pressure even further. We are going to introduce, with our G7 partners, an additional price cap for Russian oil products, and on February 24, exactly one year after the invasion began, we expect to implement the tenth package of sanctions,” he later announced.
Von der Leyen added that “Russia will also have to pay for the destruction it is causing and will have to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine.”
“To that end, we are exploring with our partners how to use Russia’s public assets [congelados pela UE no quadro das sanções] for the benefit of Ukraine,” he said.
