Russian PM calls on Eurasian Union to fight for technological sovereignty

The Russian Prime Minister urged the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) on Friday to make efforts to achieve “technological sovereignty”, in a speech delivered at the “Digital Almaty” international forum, which is held annually in that Kazakh city. .

“All the governments of the Union must fight to achieve technological sovereignty”, said Mikhail Mishustin, stressing that it is a “fundamental” issue for the security of important infrastructures and for the development of the economy.

Mishushin added that current technology products are sufficient, but warned that access to them “can be lost at any time.”

“The absence of development solutions [tecnológico] or alternatives, will lead to a chronic lag relative to the rest of the world,” he warned.

The head of the Russian executive admitted that none of the five countries that make up the EEU – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia – has a large enough consumer market to support the development of cutting-edge technologies.

“But based on cooperation, we can achieve it,” he emphasized.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Alihan Izmailov, proposed the creation of a “digital competence center”, based in Almaty, which could become a “platform for the implementation of large digital initiatives in the sphere of the UEE “.
