“Ukraine is the EU, the EU is Ukraine,” European Council President Charles Michel said in kyiv on Friday after a summit on Kyiv’s accession process to the European Union.
“The future of Ukraine is in the EU,” insisted Charles Michel during a press conference with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
A few hours earlier, Charles Michel had promised in a tweet that he would support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
EU welcomes kyiv’s “considerable efforts” to become a member
European Council President and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union recognizes “the considerable efforts that Ukraine has made in recent months to achieve the objectives underlying its candidate membership status.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has again called for arms to confront Russian forces, said on Thursday his country “deserved” to start discussing membership of the European Union this year.
