The United States postponed a visit to China by its chief diplomat, Antony Blinken, due to the detection of a Chinese balloon flying over sensitive parts of the country, the US agency Associated Press (AP) reported today.
Blinken was scheduled to visit Beijing on Sunday and Monday and had a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on his agenda.
China said it was a weather research balloon that went off course, but the United States had said it was a spy balloon flying over an area where military installations are located.
The AP, citing a US official, said the postponement of Blinken’s trip was intended to give President Joe Biden’s administration time to assess how to respond to Beijing.
