A man deliberately rammed his bus into a day care center near Montreal on Wednesday, killing two young children and injuring several more, police said.
“We think it’s deliberate, but we don’t know why,” said Pierre Brochet, police chief of Laval, a city in the suburbs of Montreal where the tragedy occurred.
The 51-year-old driver, arrested shortly after the events for “homicide and reckless driving”, was questioned by the police on Wednesday afternoon, Pierre Brochet also indicated. He had no criminal record.
An “agitated” suspect
He has not yet been charged and the circumstances of the tragedy remain unclear, police said.
It was some parents who came to drop their children off at the nursery who dominated the man, who appeared “agitated” and was “half naked”, according to witnesses.
Quebec emergency services indicated that one of the two young victims died at the scene. The other died after being treated by paramedics. The other six hospitalized children are out of danger and no adults were injured.
