Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni this Thursday considered the decision of French Head of State Emmanuel Macron to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Paris for the extraordinary meeting of the European Council.
Our forces “must be united,” Meloni said on arrival at the European Council meeting in Brussels.
On Wednesday, Zelensky visited London and later traveled to Paris, where he met Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This Thursday, the Ukrainian president flew to Brussels together with Emmanuel Macron.
However, Meloni said that “Italy is fully committed” to supporting Kiev against the Russian invasion, saying Italy’s “contribution” is very comprehensive.
“We are aware that the conflict in Ukraine concerns us all,” he added.
“I think the best way to build an option for dialogue and peace is to keep the forces in the field [de batalha ]on a balanced level. Supporting Ukraine is the best way to reach possible negotiations,” the Italian head of government stressed.
“Rome wants to be one of the protagonists, also in the reconstruction phase,” said the Italian Prime Minister.
Giorgia Meloni will hold a bilateral meeting in the margins of the European summit with Zelensky, who traveled to Brussels with Macron.
After addressing the European Parliament, Zelensky will meet the European Council as a whole later today, with a scheduled two-hour period for bilateral group meetings with the heads of state and government of the 27.
Speaking at the entrance to the extraordinary meeting, European Council President Charles Michel also stressed that the EU remains “more united than ever” in helping Ukraine, both through military means and political support.
At the meeting, EU leaders will discuss what resources can be deployed in the coming weeks and months.
The economic fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine is still on the agenda of the meeting, Michel added.
