The president of the European Parliament defended this Thursday that Ukraine’s sacrifice should be rewarded with an accession process “as soon as possible” and with all the weapons that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked for.
“This is an extraordinary moment in extraordinary circumstances”said Roberta Metsola at the start of an extraordinary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, as part of the visit of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky was cheered by all MEPs as he entered the plenary session at 11am local time (10am Lisbon).
The struggle of “Ukrainian heroes” against the Kremlin’s aggression, comparable for Metsola “with David against Goliath”, inspired everyone, he thought, adding: “I am proud to say that this house of European democracy always with you.”
And he reinforced the intention that Zelensky wants to see realised: “Ukraine is Europe and your future is in the Union.”
“The Sacrifice They Endured”continued the President of the European Parliament, “should be honored not only with words, but also with deeds”, which is why Metsola insisted on “the fastest possible process” of joining the European Union.
At the same time, Metsola believed it necessary to provide Kiev with “the long-range missiles and fighters” it has been asking for in recent weeks.
