US President Joe Biden will mark the first year of the war in Ukraine with a trip to NATO ally Poland, the White House announced on Friday.
Biden will be in Poland from February 20 to 22, scheduled a meeting with the Polish President, Andrzej Duda, and also with the members of the “Bucharest Nine”, a group of NATO countries from Eastern Europe, said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre.
Biden “will discuss our bilateral cooperation, as well as our joint efforts to support Ukraine and strengthen NATO’s deterrence,” he said.
The US President will deliver a speech to mark February 24, “a year of Russia’s relentless and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, outlining how the United States has rallied the world to support the people of Ukraine in defending their freedom and democracy.” informed Karine Jean-Pierre.
Biden’s trip to Poland is also designed to ensure continued sending of billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Ukraine, and when Russia is expected to plan another offensive.
Biden’s visit coincides with a state-of-the-nation address in Moscow by Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for February 21.
Poland is the country with the main refugee center and has provided Western military aid, largely from the United States.
Biden visited Poland just a few weeks after the start of the large-scale Russian invasion, which has been underway since February 24, and received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington in December.
Any trip from Biden to Kiev, as well as visits to the Ukrainian capital by several Western leaders, have yet to be confirmed, the AP said.
Biden’s wife, First Lady Jill Biden, made a surprise visit to Western Ukraine in May 2022.
